News and Updates from our Practice

Dr. Jodhan with two lasers

12/30/2021: We are expanding the scope of laser treatments in our Practice!

We just purchased two new BioLase lasers. We are excited to start using these lasers both for surgical procedures to minimize pain and bleeding, and for dental hygiene!

Of course, we continue to successfully use our PerioLase laser for LANAP - full-mouth periodontal surgerical treatment.

The two technologies are supplementary to each other because they operate on different wavelengths. Millennium's PerioLase MVP-7 is optimized for reducing inflamation in soft tissue, like gums. BioLase's WaterLase IPLUS laser can be used for surgical treatment of both soft and hard tissues, while EPIC HYGIENE model is best used for dental hygiene.

Our goal is to increase our use of laser technology in dentistry in order to improve patients' clinical outcomes with minimal post-operative discomfort.

Our mission at Advanced Periodontics & Implants is to improve your quality of life by ensuring that you have a beautiful healthy smile.

Dr. Jodhan

Dr. Nikisha N. Jodhan is a board-certified periodontist who founded this premier practice in order to serve her community on Chicago's North Shore.

Dr. Jodhan prides herself in a high level of personalized care, which always begins with a comprehensive evaluation, in order to provide you with an accurate diagnosis.

Dr. Jodhan is an expert clinician, whose surgical expertise complements her warmth, commitment and dedication in providing the best patient care possible.

Welcome to our office!

In early December 2017 we have completed construction of a brand-new office. It features three spacious operatories and a CBCT machine. CBCT stands for "cone beam computed tomography" and provides higher resolution using less radiation than both X-ray or traditional CT.

Our Services

We provide a wide range of periodontal services - both surgical and non-surgical. We have extensive experience in cosmetic procedures - dental implants and periodontal treatment.

We offer oral sedation for the comfort of our patients.

Dr. Jodhan is one of a handful of Chicagoland dentists who is certified to offer LANAP laser therapy: a clinically proven non-surgical alternative to perio surgery. Special Nd:YAG laser penetrates your gum tissue and selectively destroys the bacteria, diseased cells and pathological proteins that make up the inflammation and cause periodontitis. No cut, no sew, no fear!

Please explore the selection of dental treatments we offer:

Non-Surgical Services

An FDA-cleared laser treatment called the LANAP protocol offers a less painful, more successful treatment alternative to conventional surgery. Dr. Jodhan uses Nd:YAG laser machine and hair-thin optical fiber to target inflamed tissue and bacteria deep inside your gum pockets.

In order to diagnose periodontal disease, you must have a comprehensive examination performed. This is done by placing a periodontal probe within the space between the gum/gingiva and the surface of each tooth. Specific measurements are taken and we then compile the clinical observations with radiographic data to accurately diagnose your condition.

Usually the first line of treatment for periodontal disease is Initial Therapy. This procedure involves the removal of plaque and calculus, using specialized instruments, from below the gumline. Special medicated mouth rinses, and an electric tooth brush may be recommended to help control infection and healing. If the pockets do not heal after initial therapy, pocket reduction may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean.

After you have been treated for periodontal disease, either with root planning or pocket reduction therapy-or both, you will require below gumline maintenance-which will involve plaque removal and polishing. Typically an interval of three months between appointments is effective in maintaining dental health. As in many other chronic conditions, successful long-term control of the disease and prevention of tooth loss depends on continual, and possibly lifetime maintenance.

Surgical Services

If you’re bothered by a “gummy” smile or teeth that you feel are too small, you may want to consider crown lengthening. Also known as a gum lift, this cosmetic dentistry procedure can beautify your smile by exposing more of your teeth. This is a procedure which involves removing excess gum tissue, and possibly some bone, around the teeth to make them look longer. Crown lengthening may also be done for functional purposes. If there’s decay or fracture under the gum line, for example, crown lengthening can help expose more of the tooth’s crown in order to support a filling or porcelain crown.

For moderate-severe cases of periodontal disease, initial therapy is typically followed by pocket reduction treatment. It involves accessing the root surfaces by a simple reflection of gum tissue, in order to remove all putative periodontal bacteria. Not only are the roots cleaned thoroughly but the affected bone is also made smooth and reshaped, so that the area heals with shallow pockets.

A dental implant consists of two parts: a titanium post that serves as a prosthetic tooth root and a dental crown to replace the tooth above the gumline. When the biocompatible post is inserted into your jawbone, a process called osseointegration occurs, which means that your bone tissue grows tightly around the post to stabilize your custom-designed replacement teeth. This process is usually 3-4 months.

Implants are the only restorative dentistry solution that actually stops jawbone loss while retaining the healthy bone structure crucial for good oral health. And since teeth provide structure for your face and cheeks, implants in place of missing teeth can help you maintain a younger appearance. Moreover, dental implant treatment is the only tooth replacement option that provides the same level of function as natural teeth.

This is a fairly common option to improve your smile. It is also useful in addressing other dental conditions, such as toothbrush abrasion and tooth sensitivity. Dr Jodhan offers all current surgical options, namely connective tissue grafts, tissue bank allografts and free gingival grafts. In many gum grafting procedures, a small piece of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and carefully placed at the site where the gums have receded. The tissue is then sutured into position, and allowed to integrate over time.

This is a procedure done at a time of tooth extraction. The purpose of this procedure is to minimize bone loss and preserve bone architecture in order to prepare the site for dental implant.

Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) is a procedure that allows bone and tissue to regrow around a periodontally weak tooth. A major consequence of periodontal disease is diminished bone which eventually leads to loose teeth, and ultimately premature tooth loss. GTR procedures rebuild bone and lost tissue, in order to increase the longevity of the dentition.

A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root which is attached to the jaw bone.  Eventually, a replacement tooth or bridge will be firmly fixed to this root, restoring complete function to the tooth.  The key to a successful and long-lasting implant is the quality and quantity of jawbone to which the implant will be attached.  If bone has been lost due to injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation can raise the sinus floor to allow for new bone formation.

An impacted tooth simply means that it is “stuck” and cannot erupt into proper position.
The gum above the impacted tooth is opened to expose the hidden tooth underneath. If there is a deciduous tooth present, it is removed at this time. An orthodontic bracket is bonded to the exposed tooth. The bracket is attached to a miniature gold chain which will be temporarily secured to the orthodontic arch wire. Often the exposed impacted tooth is left completely uncovered. Occasionally the gum is returned to its original position above the impacted tooth with only the fine gold chain remaining visible as it exits a small hole in the gum.

"Excellent Hygienist."

I had my exam and cleaning yesterday in Dr. jodhan's office. The entire staff was exceptional in keeping the office "covid" safe. The hygienist who cleaned my teeth is excellent! She made certain each tooth was cleaned. The office is relaxing in its decor which helps for anyone who stresses before dental appointments. My experience is great. I would recommend this office.

"I give Dr. Jodhan 5 stars"

I have known Dr. Nikisha Jodhan for the past one year. She is a wonderful person and a a great periodontist. I have had gingivitis for the past 15 years. Dr. Jodhan took care of my problem last year and deep-cleaned my teeth with so much patience that I was amazed. I am a very restless person by nature, I can't sit still. So when she was cleaning my teeth, I told her to give me a break every 10-15 minutes, and she was very cooperative with me. She also gave me advice for future prevention of gum disease. I give Dr. Jodhan 5 stars and feel lucky to have a great dentist - finally!

"Saved my smile!"

I really believe Dr. Jodhan saved my smile! And, while she was a that - she made it the most enjoyable experience possible. Her gentle work was completely pain-free. In addition, her staff was very helpful and frendly. I would rate my visits with the highest possible marks.

"She is caring with a genuine concern for her patients."

I have been Dr. Jodhan's patient for over 2 yrs, but i have been a dental patient for more than 40 yrs. The dentists I've chosen had skills spanning the spectrum from archaic to 'flashy'. During the time that Dr. Jodhan has treated me, she has had to perform many complicated procedures including multiple implants, sinus lifts, extractions. I am impressed by her skills, professionalism and expertise. Even more impressive is her "chairside manner". She is caring with a genuine concern for her patients. She has turned what a lot of people dread – a visit to the dentist – into a most palatable experience.

by M.M. from Forest Hills, NY

"My first implant."

Getting this implant has been a marvellous experience - Dr. Jodhan and her staff were great. This was my first implant and I was a little leary. But they made the experience more tolerable. She took such care to ensure the implant was the right choice for me. Then, putting the implant in - as was said it was a "labour of love." She deserves the highest praise & regards for making this process easy and made me not dread coming to see her!

Dental Insurance Information

We accept all dental PPO insurances. A PPO plan will pay benefits according to the fee schedule that is specific to your group package.

In-Network:
  • Cigna PPO
  • Aetna PPO
  • Principal
  • Metlife PPO
  • Guardian
  • BlueCross BlueShield – Blue Care Dental
  • DentaMax
  • Carrington
  • United HealthCare
  • Humana PPO

Our office will file insurance claims for all PPO companies, whether we are an in-network or an out-of-network provider. It is your responsibility to know your plan maximum, coverage and limitations. Please remember that you are responsible for all deductible, co-pay and non-covered service amounts. If there is a balance due, after insurance payment, you are responsible for the full amount due.

There is a fundamental difference between how medical and dental insurance policies work, although they look outwardly similar: you pay a monthly premium for a coverage.

Most dental policies emphasize prevention and diagnostics, typically covering two annual exams and cleanings, plus X-rays and, for children and older adults, fluoride treatments etc.

Most medical policies (of the PPO type) also cover preventative annual physical examination, but really step up the coverage for those unlikely medical situations that exceed your annual deductible.

On the other hand, dental insurances commonly have what is described as “100-80-50” coverage, meaning it pays 100 percent of the cost of routine preventive and diagnostic care, such as checkups and cleanings; covers 80 percent for fillings, root canals and other basic procedures; and 50 percent for crowns, bridges, implants, surgeries and other major procedures. Most plans also limit the total of their coverage at about $1,000-$1,500 a year.

The more extensive dental treatment you need, the less of it will be covered.

The major procedures coverage can be quite restrictive based on the protocols of your insurance company. For example, your insurance company may refuse to cover the cost of a dental implant because it deems a bridge or a denture to be an acceptable alternative treatment.

So, while your dentist will work with your insurance to maximize your coverage, including submitting additional explanations and expert testimony, the dental insurance companies ultimately do limit their payouts.

A couple words about so-called CDT (Current Dental Terminology) codes. You probably think of your dental needs as one big procedure, but insurance companies require your dentist to submit very detailed itemization of all the diagnostics and work performed. Because of that, when you read your EOB (Explanation Of Benefits) or a treatment plan, it might have line items that you don't immediately recognize.

The benefits determination from your insurance company should not be the dominant factor in your decision about how to protect your own body. While most dental treatments are not life-or-death situations, having a healthy mouth will go a long way towards building a healthy body and a healthy spirit.

The HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) option restricts coverage to dental professionals within a limited network. Typically your in-network "general practicioner" dentist will determine the type of specialist care your policy covers.
